Lugar da Rua

District: Porto | County: Amarante | Parish: Aboadela

To reach Lugar da Lapa, an important place of pilgrimage, you need to go through places where the landscape is described by Aquilino Ribeiro, who knew it so well, as “Terras do Demo” The large granite stones are landmarks of the harshness and aridity of the area, which is part of Quintela Parish, in Sernancelhe Municipality. A “lapa” is, in fact, a granite stone, forming a cave which, as it was protected, is said to have served as a refuge for Nossa Senhora, from where the sanctuary gets its name. The image was brought by religious people fleeing from the Moorish General, Al Mansor, who had martyred countless Christians. Hidden here in the 10th century, it was only found centuries later by Joana, a mute shepherdess who regained her speech! The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Lapa is now a place of national pilgrimage.

The imposing Colégio dos Jesuítas building, which dates back to the 16th century, the houses, the paths, all in granite, create a unique atmosphere. This is also the source of the Vouga River and you can sip cool water from the spring. Visit the 13th century sanctuary and make the pilgrimage: the cave has a very narrow stone where tradition holds that everyone can pass, except those who have sinned grievously, and also a replica of a giant lizard hanging from the ceiling. Inside the church, there is also find a permanent Nativity scene that is worth seeing. Later, stroll through the area, discover the crosses and the viewpoints and visit the cafés. You can also explore the area by bike as there is a significant stretch of trails for this purpose.

The people of the village pay homage to Nossa Senhora da Lapa with a pilgrimage three times a year: on 10 June, 15 August and 8 September. The Aquiliniana Fair is also held here, once a year, where the products of the region are promoted and sold. From Lapa, take home the traditional and famous homemade small chesses, regional sausages and the famous bread. There are several bakeries in the area where you can get bread fresh from the oven several times a day. You can try lamb, one of the most typical dishes of the area, in one of the various restaurants in Lapa. To stay in this region, stick with tradition and choose the Nossa Senhora do Carmo convent, 10 kilometres away, a small hotel full of charm, whose restaurant is in the old chapel.
