Porto Manso

District: Porto | County: Baião | Parish: Ribadouro

“Also there in sight of the Douro, coupled with orange trees and other fruit trees. Flowing from an impressive mountain on whose summit pines trees rise... The village in the distance is a beautiful Nativity scene". This is how Alves Redol described Porto Manso Village in the 1940s, in a book of the same name. Situated in Ribadouro Parish, in Baião Municipality, the village is no longer the same after all these years. It grew and developed, due to the extraordinary surrounding landscape, with the Pala lagoon and the mouth of the Ovil River.

The ancient Roman roads, which remained active until a few decades ago, were replaced; the vegetation, once abundant, has become more rare, but the houses, narrow streets and, of course, the character of the people have allowed Porto Manso to maintain the irresistible charm that characterised the Douro villages of ancient Portugal. If you are a fan of water sports, you will find excellent opportunities here. The Douro runs calmly and the Pala pier is a sheltered location with easy docking for vessels, which is what gave it its name, Porto Manso - calm port. In the village and the nearby area, there are several places of interest, such as the Ancede Convent, the Souto Moura House, Tormes House, Lavrador House, the São Domingos Chapel and the Carrapatelo Dam. If you enjoy walking, be sure to try the walking trail, “All Roads lead to Rome”, which follows the path of the ancient Roman road that for centuries connected Bracara Augusta (Braga) and Emerita Augusta (Mérida). In the highest area along this route, a veritable history lesson, you will find the Porto Manso castro, surrounded by walls and defensive moats. There, the panoramic view over the region, with the Douro in the background, is breathtaking.

Torre House, the Porto Antigo inn and Rebolfe House are traditional houses, which have been restored to welcome visitors to Porto Manso. And no visit is complete without experiencing the flavours of the region. Delight in the freshwater fish from the river or the roast lamb with baked rice. The rabelo boat miniatures, produced by local artisans, are the ideal souvenir to take home with you.
