Vilarinho de S. Roque

District: Aveiro | County: Albergaria-a-Velha | Parish: Ribeira de Fráguas

The water of the Fílveda River, the hillside and dense vegetation are landmarks of Vilarinho de São Roque, a village in Ribeira de Fráguas Parish, in Albergaria-a-Velha. Its contagious beauty emerges in a good part of its natural framework, but there is also a lot of heritage to discover, including the old primary school, the Chapel of São Roque, the mills and the Fílveda River Dam, rural houses, small granaries, the wash house and the shrines built along the paths. So, prepare yourself to discover Vilarinho on foot or venture through nature choosing one of the many mountain bike routes that criss-cross the area.

With a landscape marked by its location, set between Arestal Mountain, the Fílveda River, which has a waterfall, and the enclosed valley, terrace farming and a wooded area punctuated by eucalyptus and pine trees are also landmarks of Vilarinho de São Roque. In fact, the entire history of the site, whose first reference dates back to the 16th century, is linked to the river, the watermills for grinding corn and the verdant forests. All the traditions of the village are based on its rural nature and popular culture, which have been well preserved here. The chapel, the granaries, the threshing floors and the public wash house, as well as the shrines built along the paths to protect the souls in Purgatory, are other attributes of Vilarinho that deserve a closer look.

Be sure to visit two other emblematic sites: the São Julião Viewpoint offers a beautiful panoramic view of the entire region and the Senhora do Socorro Park is very pleasant green space where the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Socorro stands. The village has two religious festivals, the first in honour of the patron saint who gave the place its name, São Roque, is celebrated on the third Sunday in August, and the other, dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Socorro, is on the Monday after the third Sunday in August. Some of the most emblematic dishes of the area were inherited from these festivities, such as roast veal and rice cooked in a wood-burning oven, and veal and pork stew with greens. Sweet regueifa plaited bread, honey and Vilarinho de S. Roque cavacas (light, crisp cakes) are the typical sweets. Bon appétit!
