Souto

District: Viseu | County: Penedono | Parish: Souto

Souto Village breathes history through every pore. The castle watches over this parish full of heritage, which is part of Penedono Municipality. Situated on an elevated site, it takes a bit of effort to make the climb. It’s worth it: the castle watches over the area and offers a panoramic view of the entire region. Take the opportunity to discover each of its many corners! The village is concentrated around this building, on an elevated site that is worth exploring as far as the valley where the Tordo River runs. The Souto Pillory, a national monument, deserves a good look. Later, set off to explore the diverse heritage of the village.

In addition to the Fountain and the Clock Tower, explore the many religious sites that are worth visiting, like the Parish Church and the chapels of São Sebastião, Senhora da Lapa, Divino Espírito Santo, Santa Bárbara and Senhora da Piedade. A good time to visit Souto is during the Penedono Medieval Fair, when the land dresses up in clothes from other times and takes on its most medieval aspect. Other traditions of the area, both Christian and Pagan, are singing the Janeiras, wine stomping, roasting chestnuts on the feast of São Martinho, but also the way of the cross, blessing the harvests, and midnight mass around the stump. On your way through Souto, you have to taste the roast lamb, several dishes made with chestnuts and also the sponge cake.
